The craft is something wonderful - with every letter of the word meaning what it means, full of wonder. A hole opens and I can put a lens to the hole and see what happens in that other world. Sometimes it happens without my control and I'm just a reporter. Sometimes I control what happens. Sometimes I tell a character to do something, and the character balks that he or she would never do that and to quit making them do things they aren't comfortable doing. It's a unique situation to be inside and I love every moment I get to go there.

Most of the stories were assignments for a creative writing class. Even more of them were not. I've been writing since I could string words together, and fell out of the habit or never gave myself the space to do it. Once it became assigned, putting on that old suit fit so well, and was so warm and cozy, it became the old habit. At that point, stories fell out of me and the computer and my fingers could barely keep up.

Sometimes it's an article I found on some aggregate. Sometimes it's a random thought that whizzed past my consciousness that I need to grab hold before it fades away. Sometimes it's the three o'clock in the morning wake up from a deep sleep with the shreds of a dream. I can never force inspiration - it always seems forced. I let it happen, and it happens.

I'm working on one of my favorite characters and his case files. One of his stories is in the current book I've published, and I enjoyed being in his skin, I anticipate doing a lot more of it.

Write. Write some more. Than write some more.
Then read. Read some more. Then read some more.
Then read. Read some more. Then read some more.

The best way I deal with writers block is to just write. Blogs are the greatest tool for writer's block since you can write about anything - the cat barfing on your laundry, the way the sun shines through the office window - and sometimes the act of getting words into a blank space helps overcome the block. Any what you put on a blog doesn't necessarily have to be published, just saved as a draft. Blogging helps.
