I was always super into reading growing up. As soon as I learned to read in daycare, I was hooked.
Then when I started to school, I had access to hundreds of books and I just thought it was the greatest thing in the world.
I started reading more and more and then progressed to things much beyond my age level.
Then as I got older, I fell in love with the idea of writing. Books were a things that helped me so much, and I thought that maybe I could help others by writing my own books. And that's kind of how I got started with that.

I know it may sound cliche, but my advice is simply to never give up. When I wrote Every Crooked Kingdom, I wrote it for myself. It was some part of me I wanted to express. I always loved reading and writing, but I never thought anything I did could be author potential.
Then the story really started to develop. I shared it with a few close friends and they loved it. This was probably when I was 16-17. I wrote this entire novel by hand in a notebook by hand. It was awful, but it was all I had. Then I typed it all out on a tablet to email it to friends. Finally I was able to use a laptop.
When I was 17, I sent my first query to an agent and several more after that. I received nothing but rejections. And trust me, it is very discouraging. You think that you're not good enough. But in reality, you just haven't found the right fit.
It's sort of like shoes. I imagine that agencies go through all of these stories until they get the one that feels just right.
And eventually, if you keep working on it, you will be the right fit for someone.

That's kind of a difficult question to answer. There isn't really one specific thing I do. Sometimes I'll stop writing and go do something else, maybe read or clean or anything to change my thought path.
Another thing I do is listen to music. Usually sad songs. Sometimes I can hear a song that will create a person or story in my mind. I think of how the lyrics tell a story and who that story may be about. I capture that feeling.
