Fiction-wise, I am currently working on Book Two of The Theraeon (The Kiss of Nessemi). I am now writing the tumultuous climax to that story which is so rewarding. It's what everything has been driving towards over the first two books - and I can't wait to write about what comes after, too! Non-fiction-wise, I am three quarters of the way through Worcestershire Unusual & Quirky, which should be published by Halsgrove in 2024 (Shropshire and Warwickshire to come later this year).

Two ways really. Firstly, I am in no hurry to publish my next book, so I am writing three different books at the same time (fiction and non-fiction), and alternate them on a constant 3-day cycle. This helps keep up my own interest and enthusiasm. Secondly, there are many days where I struggle to get started, but I have found loads of smooth background music on YouTube that helps to funnel the mind, and before you know it, you're up and running.

George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter - in my dreams, of course!

Advice for aspiring writers is to just keep going. If you're good enough, you will get that break eventually. Also, if you experience a lot of apathy and derision from others, just re-double your efforts to prove them wrong. Makes it twice as sweet when you have success!

My most recent book is The Strains of Malice, book one in the epic fantasy series The Theraeon. I am largely known for historical non-fiction works, so this was a radical departure for me - but an epic fantasy series is something I have always wanted to write. The idea came together at the end of 2019, particularly the structure of my fantasy world, Thera, with its geographical quirks which have driven the way different cultures have evolved over the last two thousand years. This enabled me to plan the historical feel to these novels, and the clash of cultures - which then led to the "Poldark meets Gladiator" strapline. I then quickly worked out the plot over five volumes and then set about the really fun part, which was introducing and evolving my characters.
