Goodreads asked Andrew Beardmore:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Andrew Beardmore My most recent book is The Strains of Malice, book one in the epic fantasy series The Theraeon. I am largely known for historical non-fiction works, so this was a radical departure for me - but an epic fantasy series is something I have always wanted to write. The idea came together at the end of 2019, particularly the structure of my fantasy world, Thera, with its geographical quirks which have driven the way different cultures have evolved over the last two thousand years. This enabled me to plan the historical feel to these novels, and the clash of cultures - which then led to the "Poldark meets Gladiator" strapline. I then quickly worked out the plot over five volumes and then set about the really fun part, which was introducing and evolving my characters.
