Julia Roddy She watched him sleep beside the woman who had faked her suicide. Her bloodied hand spelt "congratulations" on the Italian bedside mirror.
Julia Roddy The mystery I suggest for a plot is one of connection. Why do we connect so deeply with others and not so with some. Sometimes it is the company of strangers that meet in a place of unison. Why is it some are drawn to the absence of the sea and others are drawn to crowded streets full of chatter and how do we connect in our difference?
Julia Roddy My favorite fictional couple would have to be Harold and Maud, created by Colm Higgin's. The Novel was written forty years ago and went on to become a well acclaimed cult movie. The story is based on Harold a nineteen year old boy who is obsessed with death and fakes his own suicides, much to the horror of his narcissistic mother, He befriends Maud, a seventy nine year old woman whom he meets at a strangers funeral. The pair bond and go on to develop an inspiring journey of up's and down's and life changing decisions. The book has been out of print for a number of years but has recently been revived and is available on Amazon. I loved this narrative back in my twenties and recently watched the film for the second maybe third time, and it inspired me just as much if not more than the first time. It is a timeless piece that questions our obsession and adoration with the young and our abhorrence of old age. It acts as a healthy reminder of how valuable old age can be in a climate that strives to stay youthful in the name of vanity.
Julia Roddy It usually comes from an idea, that grows as I write. Characters come alive in a similar way. I get to know them by asking them questions, or looking inside their fridge. ask them questions like what would you wear to the dance, the local shop? How would you react to a tragedy, how would you eat a cream puff??
Julia Roddy Accept it. And move on. Everyone has their own way of working. Part of the problem is wanting perfection, that can create blockages, just get it out then polish, polish and polish! Then give it to someone you is a very good polisher and they will return it with all you're worst fears, accept and move on and polish.
Julia Roddy Everything, getting to know the characters, letting them make mistakes. Peoples response to what you write. Seeing the finished product on a book shelf. Working out the puzzle of a plot line. Making money out of something you love doing.
Julia Roddy Anyone can write . We all have stories. Just keep at it, do courses to polish up on skills, and it's not a race. And we need more women stories.
Julia Roddy Izzy a grumpy disabled woman who sets off on a journey away from her over protective mother.....
Julia Roddy I came up with the idea during a masters course years before I wrote the book
