Julia Roddy My favorite fictional couple would have to be Harold and Maud, created by Colm Higgin's. The Novel was written forty years ago and went on to become a well acclaimed cult movie. The story is based on Harold a nineteen year old boy who is obsessed with death and fakes his own suicides, much to the horror of his narcissistic mother, He befriends Maud, a seventy nine year old woman whom he meets at a strangers funeral. The pair bond and go on to develop an inspiring journey of up's and down's and life changing decisions. The book has been out of print for a number of years but has recently been revived and is available on Amazon. I loved this narrative back in my twenties and recently watched the film for the second maybe third time, and it inspired me just as much if not more than the first time. It is a timeless piece that questions our obsession and adoration with the young and our abhorrence of old age. It acts as a healthy reminder of how valuable old age can be in a climate that strives to stay youthful in the name of vanity.
