I'm reading The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler right now. I want to study his writing style. I have noticed his character development and scene descriptions are outstanding. I am very appreciative of his story telling and phrasing. This story is early 20th century and the book I am presently writing is in that same era. I've picked up a couple of things from this author; like "pony glass". I totally forgot about pony glasses and added it to my book. You see, I'm not really into the liquor thing but Chandler reminded me. Way too much fun.

The mystery of life and subtle influences. Do we create our own destiny? Yes and no. We are born into circumstances. Some are observable and some not so easily. I like to ferret out the "not so easily seen" powers that move us; DNA, chemistry, personal belief systems, faith, culture, societal belief systems, some that are embraced and some discarded. These things make up characters. My first book, the main character is based on my dad who was a B-29 pilot in WWII. My second book is based on my uncle who lived a short life in the early 20th century. I share my view of my family which evolves over time with research and writing. If I do it right I also touch the empathy of my reader so that they ponder too.

I'm inspired by the stories of my nuclear and extended family members. It's amazing what I have learned delving down into the research and conducting interviews about folks. I feel connected.
The best thing a reader can tell me is, "I never knew" or "I learned" . That's another way of being connected. Loving it if I can successfully do this and touch heart strings too.

I do something physical to release the energy and then I sleep. I have discovered my sub-conscious is a powerful resource that creates ideas and solves problems while I'm sleeping. Early morning is my power time.

It was through my studies of Dr. Murray Bowen’s Family Systems Theory that I became interested in genealogy and collecting oral histories of my own nuclear and extended family members. I write my books based on my family history. That’s how it starts. Then there is world history and specialized research.
