Thank you so much for your question!
I grew up very interested in all things Irish due to my ancestry. When I discovered Morgan Llywelyn's books, which really brought the old tales to life, my interest expanded. I began researching CúChulain, Finn and of course the Druids. There is so much depth to the old tales and if you study them, they reveal many interesting things.
I'd always been drawn to writing fantasy fiction but I decided I didn't want to write about elves and dwarves exactly but wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to write about magic and the supernatural but didn't want to write about vampires or traditional monsters. When I started writing Hawthorne I'd never heard of anyone else writing about Druids in a modern day setting and I thought it was a fun idea that would be a new approach.
In the course of my research, I discovered a rich body of knowledge about the Druids and the more I dug, the more I found. The Druid's represent a different way of looking at the world, one that embraces nature and the earth, one that re-enchants the world. In addition to making entertaining fiction, Druidry represents much that is right in the world and I hope that my book opens people's eyes to different ideas and perhaps more appreciation for the mystery of life.

(view spoiler)[ROWAN, was a natural progression from HAWTHORNE, picking up where the first book took off. As I was writing the first draft, it was very rainy and I was drawn to the idea of some of the characters going to Scotland and I just went with it. I've never been there and would love to go someday. I did a lot of research and know some cool places I'd love to see in person. And then there are dragons. I don't want to give away too much, but I just needed to write a story with a terrible dragon. (hide spoiler)]

Usually an idea will come to me, sometimes its just a feeling, nothing specific. When that happens, I sit down and go with it. I'm more of "pantser" meaning I write by the seat of my pants but I've started recently to do more outlining because it helps save time. If I just go with the inspiration, sometimes I end up with a story that runs into a wall and I have to start over. So I am evolving as a writer and trying to plan things out a bit as I write.

Last spring, I wrote the first draft for ROWAN, which is the sequel to HAWTHORNE. I'm currently working hard on getting HAWTHORNE out there, but I hope to soon go back to ROWAN and start revisions.

My advice is to read a lot, especially in the genre you want to write. I also suggest reading books on the craft of writing and continually hone your skills. Attending writing conferences is also a great thing to do. You can learn so much in a weekend and make some new writing friends too!

I love being able to just go into my imagination and create. It always amazes me how the time just evaporates, especially when I'm working on creating something new. When I'm done, I get to share it with other people and that is the best.

I find that music really inspires me. If I get stuck writing a certain scene or even at the start of a project. I put on a song or album that evokes the mood I want. I put on the headphones and go into the feeling of the music and then start to write. When I'm creating something new, this is often how I work. I listened to Loreena McKennitt a lot while working on Hawthorne. I also listened to Evanescence and sometimes Metallica too.
