E.L. Botha I read and talk to my kids. We love to make up stories together. My 3-year-old daughter loves to set blankets on the floor so we can sit down and she can tell us a story. She always starts out "Months and months upon a time..." It's adorable. We like to build on each other's ideas, and sometimes we come up with something amazing!
E.L. Botha I love creating something. In so many professions, you work all day and don't have anything really tangible to show at the end of it. When I finish a project, I have a beautiful book that I get to sit on the sofa and read to my kids!

The flexibility is pretty nice, too. I can be a full-time stay-at-home mom, work at a couple other odd jobs on the side, and still write in my free time. Since I'm self-published, there aren't any hard deadlines. I work when I can, where I can.
E.L. Botha Go for it! Write it down! Then, find someone who knows what they're doing and get them to help you. ;) Beta readers, editors, illustrators, or even just friends to bounce ideas off of; all are valuable.
E.L. Botha Honestly? I've got four different projects going at once now! I have three field guides in the work and the third Volcano Dragon book! So I guess it's safe to say I'm currently working on maintaining my sanity? ;)
E.L. Botha Usually by talking to kids! Little ones are filled with amazing ideas! I'll often get the beginning of an idea from talking to my kids. And there's nothing like a fresh idea to inspire you to write!
E.L. Botha My most recent book, The Volcano Dragon Saves the Day, is the second book in the Volcano Dragon series. My son and I came up with the first book together, and the second book was a natural extension of the first. The Volcano Dragon, Edgar, begins his friendship in book one. In book two we get to watch their friendship grow as they face challenges together.

The dog, Beau, is inspired by the dog of a good friend of mine that passed away recently. It was so nice to be able to honor his life in this book!
