David Calder My series on the events that have transformed Israel come from an event that happened in 1978 when I was at college in the US that moved me deeply, and my belief that the Jewish nation was and is being treated unfairly. My Ben Adams books arose from a realization one day in Seattle, where I was working in the software industry, that I was addicted to pats on the back for doing a meaningless job very well, and a lot of subsequent thinking about how to get off the merry-go-round and achieve a real life with real values that was uniquely my own.
David Calder I began to take it seriously in university and was writing a lot of poetry at the time. I was also in my life-defining relationship. I had a series of experiences where the words that appeared were more meaningful to than me than I had any right to expect. I grabbed hold of that energy and never let go. Now if I didn't write I wouldn't know who I am.
David Calder Two new novels and tidy-ups of two books that have been in progress a while.
David Calder Be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them. There is no one path, and no one right way. Enjoy the journey, for you are doing one of the few things that is unique to you. Hope for some luck along the way.
David Calder There is just you and the the story. No-one else to depend on. No-one to impress (yet). It's all on you. I find that very liberating, though it can also be hard to live with at times.
David Calder I work on a number of manuscripts at once. Right now I'm writing another Israeli based book, plus a sequel to the first Ben Adams book set in southern France, and tidying up book of short stories and a book of poetry. Plus I do commercial writing for corporations when asked. So when I get stuck on one I switch to another, or go and spend time with my horses. We have a new foal that needs regular attention.
