Anne Talmage Cooksey I'm currently working on the sequel to Spirit Dad. They are off and running again in my head, so I'm working as hard as I can to keep up!
Anne Talmage Cooksey Take a bubble bath or go for a long walk. Either one allows my mind to float and drift away for a much needed R&R break. Afterwards, ideas start to download again.
Anne Talmage Cooksey Late nights, coffee, pajamas, and the feeling that you're never alone in your head!
Anne Talmage Cooksey Read. Read constantly. Read voraciously. Read in line at the airport, in restaurants, in traffic jams, and whenever you have a free moment. The more I read, the more I want to write. The more I read, the more I expand my horizons and my edges of possibility. The more I read, the more I want to create my own worlds. The stories teach me how to reach out, grab someone, and bring them along for the ride!
Anne Talmage Cooksey I get inspired to write by observing people in their natural habitats (!) and hearing snatches of conversations. I have a photographic memory (visual and auditory) so I can experience something and play it back in my head later. People are so amazingly truthful and colorful -- it's like being given an entire treasure chest of story ideas to play with!
Anne Talmage Cooksey My most recent book, Spirit Dad, is a young adult/new adult suspense novel about a teen whose father is killed unexpectedly. Three days before I was born, my father died in a helicopter explosion. He walked out the door one day, went to work, and never came back. Ever since I was little, I remembered my mother talking to my father all the time -- asking for advice, where to locate an important document, constantly involving him in our lives on a daily basis -- every card, gift, and letter were all signed from Mom and Dad-in-Spirit. I grew up having a very comfortable ongoing relationship with family members and friends who had passed on -- especially my dad. It never felt odd or strange to me. And there have been many harrowing moments when I felt his presence and protection. The idea has been with me forever. It finally grew impatient and demanded a voice. So I complied.
