When I find I just cant get through a section, or have written myself into a corner, I go back to my plot outline. This lets me get re-grounded, sort of back to story baseline. Usually it helps to get past the block.

My own life has been, well, rather boring. As much as I'd like to be involved in mysterious events, it hasn't happened yet. One of my ancestors, back in the early 1600's immigrated from France to Canada. I always wondered why a young man who lived in a large city all his life and trained in cabinet making would decide to cross the Atlantic and become a farmer in the wilderness.

Inspiration is easy. I get new ideas everyday. It's deciding which to pursue that's the tough part. One good way, promoted by my mentor Nancy Kress, is when you read or hear about an event or discovery that interests you to ask what if this were taken to some ultimate conclusion. What if it went horribly wrong. What if it became a great success, what impact on society would it bring. There are hundreds of angles to every event to explore.

I won't lie, there were a few times I seriously considered giving up writing. But I kept thinking bout a quote attributed to Ray Bradbury, "The only way to fail as I writer is to stop writing." So, keep writing, even a little bit every day or week. Finding the time has always been my challenge. I'm a morning person and my day job eats up all the best writing time of the day.

Right now I'm plotting the sequel to String Theory along with a short story also set on the Albatross Station. In between that I'm working on Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition game supplements.

My most recent novel, String Theory, was originally a short story idea that took on a life of its own. I was reading an astrophysics article and the image of a giant ball of string popped into my head.
