My favorite fictional couple will always be Jo and Laurie from LITTLE WOMEN. I still curse Louisa May Alcott for keeping them apart! The good Professor Bauer could never satisfy my fiery idol Jo, and there's no way Laurie could ever be happy with flighty Amy. Between that and the fate of poor Beth, Louisa left wounds on my heart that will never heal.

Thank you Barb!! I am working on another one, but at this point the greatest is suspense is when I will ever manage to finish it (I write way too slowly!)!

I consider it a mix, but if I had to narrow it down, I'd say it's more literary suspense than historical fiction. But I'm happy with however you choose to categorize it -- I'm just honored to be among your favorite reads of the year!

Hooray! I'm glad you found them and hope your book club had a great discussion!

(view spoiler)[I finished this book a few days ago and I just can not stop thinking about Lucy and Lilith. Incredible story and when it ended I felt as though I lost a friend.
I was wondering, however, why did Mrs. Evans feel she could only protect Emily from Mr. Evans abuse? I feel like there is so much more depth to Mrs. and Mr. Evans relationship that I failed to put together.
Looking forward to you next book! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Hi Brooke! Thanks for your question and I'm sorry it took me almost a week to answer--busy here! Yes, there is quite a bit of depth to the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Evans, but it's hard to suss out because the story is narrated by Lucy, who has only a dim perception of it. But you may remember that, when she tells the story of her parents' courtship, she alludes to Mrs. Evans wanting to escape her father....and that she met Mr. Evans when she was picking up the sleeping pills her mother would use "to make her own escape from the hunchbacked farmer." In that scene is the tiniest hint of a childhood of abuse, a pattern Mrs. Evans found herself trapped in again in her marriage to Mr. Evans, only this time it was she who was the powerless mother. Basically, in protecting her youngest and, she believed, most vulnerable child, she did what she could given her traumatic history and emotional damage. There are also a few hints in there about how frail and childlike Mrs. Evans looks. Mr. Evans, a pedophile who tried to fight and, later, justify his urges, would be attracted to just sort a woman. I hope that helped! It's my first book, and I imagine there are many things I didn't make as clear as I wanted to! (hide spoiler)]

Hi Bobbi!! I'm so glad you enjoyed The Lost Girls. I am working on my next book. Now that I've gotten my daughter off to college at last (sob!) I will be turning to it full time!

I'm not even sure how old this post actually is, but I saw the words 'daughter off to college...sob' and I couldn't stop myself from jumping in on my own pity party here- I recently had to send my ONLY daughter away to college in New York City!!!! We live in Missouri....that's very, very far and I would love a new book in the genre of 'The Lost Girls' to take up some of my time that I'm now spending moping & plotting how to get my girl to move back, lol.

(view spoiler)[Hi. I just finished The Lost Girls and enjoyed it immensely. I have a detail question. When Lucy suggests that Emily had run away again, Eleanor is asked to search Emily's things and finds several dresses, etc. missing. Where did these things go? There's no mention of Lucy or Lilith doing anything with them and Emily was wearing them when she returned from running away before. I can't figure it out. Thanks. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Hi Shelly! Thanks for your question. There is a brief mention of Lucy and Lilith burning the clothes and the little purse in the woods, on page 321: "The slipper was caked with dried mud on the bottom, but it was dry...Later I would hide it deep in our closet, and I would keep it even after Lilith and I burned Emily's clothes and purse in the clearing by the Hundred Tree." I hope that helps! (hide spoiler)]
