I honestly don't know how I arrive at a book idea. A concept percolates in the back of my mind for awhile, then calls me to address it in some way. It's a mysterious process that I embrace with respect.

I write in a journal every day, so it is something natural to me. I like to think about my characters and plots during long walks in the woods, and also during early morning hours before life's mental clutter sets in. The creative process takes immense effort but is something that must be allowed to flow. I'm a believer in incubating ideas during periods of rest. When the time to produce arrives, discipline and effort are what make it all happen. Creative writing takes a great chunk of time, but the editing that follows is the real work and most time consuming.

I am working on my second novel. It features main character Darly, a young woman finding her way in the world. As part of her academic thesis, she gathers a group of older women, intending to study the effects of the Women's Movement on their lives. The group takes on a magnificent life of its own but Darly is soon over her head. What she learns about life from these women overwhelms her and causes her to shake suppositions about her own future. At a critical point, the older women are there for her.

Just do it.
Just start.
Keep at it.
Believe in yourself.
Finish what you start.
Know that if you do not share what is in you, you have not made your mark on the world. Only you can do what only you can do.

I love being able to invent my own universe. How empowering to design a world full of characters and events! It's wonderful to sit down and contemplate one's own literary creation. Ultimately, I eventually have to be honest with myself and determine whether something works or something does not. One of the hardest tasks is trying to critically assess my own work. It's a fine line between being overly critical and not critical enough. Only one route will allow me to return to the computer and work again. Somehow, I find a way. I don't think it's a good idea to give up on a dream.

I feel like the best way to write, is to write. I'm not concerned with flow when I start and I don't judge myself. There is plenty of time for editing during consequent drafts.
