Toni Fuhrman My immediate response to your question is to read Henry James. "The Master" is adept at minutely exploring the inner life of his characters. If you're relatively new to Henry James, you might start with his earlier work: The Portrait of a Lady, Washington Square, The Turn of the Screw. His later work is more challenging. If you enjoy reading biographies, Leon Edel's Henry James: A Life, is definitive, and I remember it as totally absorbing. Let me know how it goes.
