Some have suggested that Powerballs was written as a satirical indictment of our materialistic society and the common misnomer that money alone will solve your problems. Yes, that central theme is certainly at the core of this novel. But most importantly, I wanted to write a fast-moving, rip-roaring, light-hearted and fun novel that would appeal to both men and women who have reached an age where they hear the clock ticking. All the more reason to keep adventuring, experiencing, living, as Rose and Henry do in Powerballs.

Another in the series of Jimmy Clifton novels. Jimmy has left me to do all the heavy lifting. He does expect, however, that his royalty checks will arrive monthly at Hotel Eden Roc, St. Barths, c/o Carter Banks, guest.

I'm relatively new to the art of fiction, but if I were to give advice it would parallel what writers have always said to those coming up: learn your craft (this comes from a lot of reading, experimentation and studying the 'greats'); and write every day (or at least be jotting down ideas, bits of dialog, notes on settings etc.). If you have talent, and you work at it, pretty soon you will have small successes: getting a short story or two published...winning a small press award...and the start of more ambitious projects like your first novel. It's a slow, arduous journey to be sure, through beautiful but dry, rugged country. Keep at it. If you're good enough, the long-awaited rains will come.

For me, the creative process is an adventure. Every story is like going into an undiscovered country and uncharted territory. There's nothing like starting with a clean sheet of paper and seeing how a story and characters will unfold. It's fun, too, to work at improving your craft. A lot of what I write goes into the garbage, but every once in awhile you hit it out of the park with a description, or a bit of dialog, or a plot twist, that you know will delight and intrigue the reader.

My day job is advertising, where deadlines are always looming. Great ideas and inspiration are often hard to come by, but you plow through anyway to keep the wolves at bay. This fast-paced, 'thinking outside the box' environment doesn't allow for writer's block. If an idea is bad, it gets discarded and you quickly move on. I applied the same approach when writing my first novel. In the immortal words of Hemingway: keep throwing punches, something will land.
