My mother. She and I were incredibly close until dementia stole her away a little at a time, but I've always felt there was so much more to her than she let her children see. She was married to a difficult man for many years before finally taking back her independence, and she had an unbreakable will despite being practically crippled by arthritis. I think she intrigues me because there were so many 'might have been' scenarios in her life, and so many things I didn't know about her. She was a sweet, lovely woman who once confronted another woman's abusive husband when he tried to come into our house. She wasn't very big and she rarely raised her voice, but no one ever crossed her. I could write an entire book about what I do know about her, and it would only scratch the surface.

Sometimes I listen to music that reminds me of my plot or characters. Sometimes I'll watch a show or movie that's in the same genre to get me in the mindset. Usually all I have to do is think about the story and playing it out in my head -- that always makes me want to do the work.

Read a lot. Write a lot. Find your voice and write what you want to read. Write what you love, not what you think will sell. And get a critique partner -- someone you trust to read your work and give a fair analysis of it.

I've never really had writer's block. If a book isn't working, or I can't get myself to write, it's because there's a problem with the plot. Once I find that, I'm back on track.
