For me, writing keeps me sane, balanced. But it comes with heavy burdens, least of which is the amount of time it takes to craft just one book. Patience was never my forte, so it had to alter my entire outlook on the craft in order to get through the process and learn how it would work for me in the future. Time is the real burden for me as a writer, the real hump in the road. I have so many damn tales pent up inside, but to do it right it takes time and patience.

I'll be honest... I first thought up the basic outline for Dregs of the Culver Waste back in 2004 or 2005. I originally wanted to create a world set in medieval Japan with heavy doses of samurai culture. But I soon realized the entire concept was too limiting for what I really wanted to do, so by 2006 the core idea for Sand and Scrap really took hold. After that, 9 years passed as ideas both large and small trickled in, shaping and altering the original world of the Culver into what it is today.

I was originally a budding film maker who studied film and video editing at the School of Visual Arts, so storytelling was always in my veins. But I think the real turning point was after I read Frank Herbert's Dune. It was then that I realized I would never be able to create the kind of worlds I really wanted to on film - at least, not without millions of dollars and hollywood connections, neither of which I had. Frank Herbert's work showed me the possibilities that were out there, the worlds waiting to be created and discovered. And I had but to tap a keyboard to bring my own to life, so it was an easy decision from there.

Music and coffee. It's been a long time since I got hit with a really bad case of it, but music - especially movie scores or Mozart - always helps tear down the walls, no matter how big or small.

Oddly enough, I'm working on a standalone novel set in the same world, but on a different continent. While redrafting Dregs and working on Book 2, I fell head-over-heels in love with a new character. Before I knew it, I was obsessed with his tale and decided to break from the Culver and try something a bit different. As of now, the title for the new novel is Haliden's Fire and it follows a down-and-out artist racing against time and fate on the fire scorched continent of Alimane.
