Falco and Helena, from the Falco series by Lindsey Davies. They are a really strong and believable couple. Davies writes the relationship really well with plenty of humour.

From the life a real life spy, James Burke. Irish born he served in the French army before being captured by the British. He turned his coat and joined the British Army. He became a spy and worked for the Duke of York, then head of the British Army. He travelled to the Spanish colony of Rio de la Plata to judge if they were likely to rebel. Then his missions took him to Madrid as the French staged a coup. His brother was an aide to one of Napoleon's marshals and he had connections in all the right places. He could travel wherever he wish in Europe, even Paris.
Later he went across to Brazil and became the lover of a Portuguese Princess in exile.

By reading history. It's full of great characters who did things most readers would never believe, especially some of the people at the heart of the wars with Napoleon.

Marry or be in a relationship with someone you trust to actually tell you if you are writing rubbish. Being supportive isn't enough they have to brutally honest if needed.

For me it's weaving a plot around real characters and events. Filling in the gaps of history with my own characters.

To be honest it's not something I've ever suffered from. Writing historical fiction I get plenty of impetus from the research and the real events.
