Yes, the books in the Holiday Corral series are stand alone.

After the great flood of 2016 here in Louisiana, hubby and I volunteered at a makeshift emergency shelter for dogs, cats, pigs, horses, you-name-it, that were displaced or lost during the storm.
The idea started brewing for a story about a young woman who struggles to keep her no-kill shelter for dogs financially afloat. Thus, Thanksgiving at Canine Corral came into being.

I don't think there's a single answer. If I'm blogging, I get to write my inner most thoughts, my successes and failures in life, and bare my soul. When I write novels, I write the things I dream or think about before sleep comes. I often tell myself stories before drifting off to dreamland. Sometimes these stories are the basis for my next novel.

I finished writing Thanksgiving at Canine Corral and was able to get it out in time for the Holidays. Yay for me!
I'm in the throes of indecision for my next project. Write a sequel to Saving Chase, or get going with another Corral novella? Ideas are brewing, but I need a short break to get the little gray cells reactivated with ideas.

Read everything you can on the subject of writing. Learn about POV (point of view), showing VS telling, conflict, etc. Buy the most recent copy of The Chicago Manual of Style or subscribe to them online. If you have any doubts about how to use ellipses, em dashes, or questions on what goes inside quotation marks VS what should be written in italics, you'll find the answers in there.
Most of all, just WRITE. Get your thoughts on paper and keep on plugging away.
