S.J. Kimberly Well, first it is important to get into a habit of writing, even when you feel you don't have anything to write. If I really get stuck, I go take a walk or work on a different part of the story. At one point in Mir Maid, I was badly stuck and had to re-outline and reorganize the story until it started to make sense again.
S.J. Kimberly Best. Job. EVER. The "being a writer" part of my day is when I get to drink coffee, day dream, and finally laugh (or cry) at all the bits and pieces of humanity I've picked up over the week.
S.J. Kimberly Write. Keep journals. Write short stories. Write long stories. Write bits of dialogue you hear in the bus station. Write badly, but just keep writing.
S.J. Kimberly Well, I am taking a break from the world of Mir Maid to work on a short children's book. The working title is: "Jimmy Logan and the Lamplighter's Curse". It is about a boy in a robot suit who perceives a reality that other people miss.
S.J. Kimberly I read. A lot. I journal, dream, and I watch people. I love hearing people's stories, and I think even the most fantastical things in my own writing often have a small basis in people I encounter every day.
S.J. Kimberly Elements of this story have been percolating in the back of my mind for many years. I'd written half a book a few years ago that took place in this same universe, two millennium earlier. In February of 2015 I had the opportunity to spend some time with my grandmother, an amazing woman who served in the Women's Army Corp during WWII. I got to hear all of her adventures and stories one more time, about how she'd gone from being an awkward teen to establishing her own school for EEG techs, and how her time in he army gave her the confidence and training she needed to make that happen. I week after our visit, she died. That March, I became serious about really sitting down and writing this book, and I think Ana's growth as a person has a lot to do with my grandmother's stories
