Jon Frankel I don't really get writer's block, if I understand the term correctly. I have learned to keep at things, just keep going. I edit old work if I have nothing to say. I keep a writer's sketch book. I write poetry. Sometimes I go to my desk an just read poetry.
Jon Frankel You get to create your entire world. You do it all. If there's a sign on the wall, you are a sign maker. if there's a menu, you are a menu writer. I get to be all of my characters. How many adults are allowed to sit alone in a room for hours a day imagining things beyond themselves?
Jon Frankel Read everything, have broad interests beyond literature, overcome narcissism and ego, self-struggle, read more, and write every day. Also, and this ties into the ego business, learn to create freely, but edit severely, learn to hear your own writing as a reader would.
Jon Frankel I sequel, actuallly, prequel, to GAHA: Babes of the Abyss.
Jon Frankel I don't know. Inspiration is necessary, but sometimes in short order. Writing is an addictive activity, a habit, the thing I must do every day, inspired or not. Inspiration, when it comes, is of the imagination. I am inspired by reactive emotion, by aspiration, by fear, by desire.
Jon Frankel It was the combination of two ideas. One was a story I read in true crime book, The World's Worst Women called The First Acid Bath Murders, about the sisters Katherine and Philomene Schidt and a murderous lawyer Alexander Serrat. In the 20's they took out life insurance policies on people and killed them, dissolving the bodies in acid. The other was an idea for a sci fi book about genetic mutants who clone themselves and rule the US as a military, aristocratic caste, where wealth is literally in the blood.
