(view spoiler)[Dear Ms. Henson,
I just finished the Devil's Within and your story ripped my heart out and put it back together again. I enjoyed your book immensely, but I have a question about the relationship between Nate and Brandon. After waking up from his coma, how does Brandon view Nate? Would he be willing to mend their relationship or is it out of the question? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I would say that Brandon is angry with Nate (justifiably so). I think he would be open to friendship, eventually, but it would take a lot of time and healing, and that's not really something a relationship can bounce back from in one piece--it would never quite be the same. The people. Readers, other writers, industry folks. I've met so many wonderful, imaginative, brilliant people since I started writing. I'm so lucky that I get to call them friends and contemporaries.

I think I would go into Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Universe. Zipping through space on a ship with an infinite improbability drive, hopping between planets, eating at the restaurant at the end of the universe, all sounds pretty awesome to me!

My favorite advice comes from Stephen King's "On Writing." He said to write honestly. That's stuck with me--especially while writing "Devils Within." I interpret it to mean: don't filter your writing or your characters. Be it the language they use, the way they think, or the way they treat people. Write them the way they are. Make them real, flaws and all, and you'll connect with readers in a new way.

This book was inspired by real events. I read an article about a kid who grew up in a white supremacist environment. Just like Nate, this kid's father led a white supremacist group. The kid shot and killed his father while he slept. I kept wondering what has to happen to a kid to reach that point at such a young age, and Nate just came to me. I was in the middle of the first draft when Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson and was definitely influenced by the conversations happening at that time. This was a hard story to tell, but I think it's a necessary one.
