Goodreads asked S.F. Henson:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

S.F. Henson This book was inspired by real events. I read an article about a kid who grew up in a white supremacist environment. Just like Nate, this kid's father led a white supremacist group. The kid shot and killed his father while he slept. I kept wondering what has to happen to a kid to reach that point at such a young age, and Nate just came to me. I was in the middle of the first draft when Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson and was definitely influenced by the conversations happening at that time. This was a hard story to tell, but I think it's a necessary one.
