Eric Klein This was actually quite a challenging question, but then this morning it hit me, I have the perfect mystery for a plot seed.
Suddenly this past month 4 pairs of black men's socks with patterns appeared in the clean laundry over 3 weeks. First 1 pair, then the next week 2 pairs, and the third week the last pair. All of them are sitting on my dresser so I know that they are not the same pair over and over.

There are four of us in the house and I buy the socks for my step-son and myself, and my cousin wears a much larger size.

Now these were not my wife's socks, they are too small for my cousin, and they are not ones that I have bought.

Where did these socks with patterns coming from?
Eric Klein The variety of things that count as legitimate research topics. From how to make the best french fries to ways to clean soil of heavy metals. My search history is very eclectic as I needed different things at different parts of the story.
Eric Klein If I can not figure out what to write I do more research, look for what new discoveries have happened since I last looked.
For example I went back and updated the chapter on Mars because they found a large area of water ice in an easy to reach area just under the surface. This inspired me to change the location of the first farm on Mars and thus past the block.
Eric Klein I toyed with writing back in school, even started a sequel for The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (I guess now we would call it fanfic) on a line printer and greenbar paper. Then got out of writing for fun for a long time.

This work was based on a dream I had that worked out to be chapters 1, 2, and 4 of my current work in progress. From there it grew as I told it to my wife and family. They kept asking strange questions and pointing out problems or missing details. So as I fleshed it out to them it became clear that I needed to write it down.
Eric Klein Since I am still aspiring myself this is easy - write what you would like to read. And try to write a bit every day, 20 - 30 min. a day may not seem like much but it adds up fast.
Eric Klein The One: A Cruise Through the Solar System
Eric Klein This particular story started from a rather vivid dream I had that was almost exactly the first two chapters, the rest was fleshed out as I discussed it with my scientific advisory team, friends, and family.
