Alexander Lawrence The cockatrice is something which I hope to study in depth at some point, but at the moment I won't be much help. Off the cuff, I'd say that it could be symbolic of the mystery priests and high-level occultists of all sorts. The cockatrice is a combination of bird and viper, which are representative of divinity and earthly (Satanic) wisdom, respectively. Isaiah says that the cockatrice comes forth from the serpent's root, which I suspect may stand for lying knowledge, or so-called gnosis. The kind of "creature" which arises from gnosis is the true occultist, who believes that he is discovering and unleashing his inner divinity through the rebirth into sacred knowledge.

As far as the orchard aspect, anything I offered would be wild speculation. Maybe these cockatrices are the keepers of the fruit of esoteric knowledge?
