Write. Write everything and anything. Finish something, whether it be a short story or a full-length novel. Learn how to take criticism. Even if an idea doesn't pan out, don't consider it a failure - it might come in handy some day. Just write.

I have a variety of ways (depending on my mood). Sometimes I go for a walk to clear my head, or I go to a library or coffee shop to minimize distractions. Listening to music can help put me in the 'mood' of my current project. Sometimes I write a place-holder (which is usually terrible) just to get to the more interesting part.
My best/least-favourite method is to think about the problem as I'm going to sleep, because I know that the answer will come to me just as I'm about to drift off, and I'll have to wake up to write it down. The more tired I am the better this method works.
