Read your book The House Fell on Her Head - very good book that kept me guessing and trying to work out the how and why. I was taken back in time with Frank and brought back to the future with Alice. Did you do a lot of research about WW2?
Kate Mitchell Hello Lorna, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I researched a huge amount. The challenge was then to not use it all, which would be boring, but to get inside the period, imagine what it would be like living during those events. I read a lot of people's stories as well as factual information about the war generally and the war specifically in Sheffield. All historical information should be accurate (though someone has pointed out one error which I will correct in the next edition). Thankyou for your interest.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Kate Mitchell I don't believe in writer's block. I get lack of time and sometimes I would rather do something else. If I wasn't writing productively, I wouldn't call myself a writer. I'd use the time gardening.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Kate Mitchell It's all about being a story-teller and entertaining people.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Kate Mitchell Focus on a specific goal. Competitions are excellent for giving focus, and often, a theme. Find a comp, write that story, send it in. Just do it, and keep doing it, until it happens for you.

What are you currently working on?
Kate Mitchell I am currently working on a collection of short stories which I hope will be published next year. Also, I plan to finish off a novel which started life as a script, later this year.

How do you get inspired to write?
Kate Mitchell Inspiration is everywhere. My problem is not where to get ideas, but how to manage the number and range of ideas that come to me all the time. I am inspired at every turn. The problem is finding the time to write it!

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Kate Mitchell One day, I was cutting the hedge in my garden. My elderly neighbour called, 'Mind where you put your feet, we buried all sorts there during the War.' What, I wondered, might she have buried there? I was a probation officer, so it wasn't going to be as simple as a few old cans and bottles, was it? It was going to be the proceeds of a bank robbery, or perhaps a body....
