D.M. King As an 8th and 9th grade English teacher, I read quite a bit of YA fiction in multiple genres. I enjoy action adventure and science fiction, but one of my all time favorite novels is Birthmarked, none of those two genres but an amazing read!
D.M. King Swoosh...the razor-sharp guillotine blade raced toward the sentinel's bulging- necked victim. 'Twould be a savory full meal tonight.
D.M. King Into the Dim by Taylor, The Knife of Never Letting Go by Ness, and whatever else I have time for. I am drafting an Adult action/adventure novel called Clear. Excited about this premise! Stay tuned.
D.M. King I love this question...numerous moments in my life I have experienced deja-vu so strongly it was downright scary. Growing up, there was this picture of a horse in our living room, and I swore it kept showing up in my deja-vu moments and in my dreams. The real mystery? When I asked my parents about the picture as I grew older, they told me no picture ever existed on our wall. So why did I remember it so strongly? It has vexed me to this day.
D.M. King Not much of a romance reader, I guess it would be a toss up between Connor and Risa in Unwind and Cassie and Evan in The 5th Wave. I am not much of a traditionalist, I guess.
D.M. King I use a different part of my brain in some way like draw or color, exercise, read, but mostly write my way through it. Contrary to popular belief, not everything we write is amazing, but ALL of it can be fixed! That's the true beauty of writing anything.
D.M. King The BEST thing? Living and breathing in the land of your characters for as long as it takes then sharing them with the world. Knowing that one sentence could impact a person for a lifetime. Now that's power.
D.M. King I think you're either a writer or you're not. There's no such thing as an aspiring writer. If you write, you're a writer. Now--if you hope to be published one day, remember one simple rule. The BEST part of writing anything is that if it's trash, it can be re-written into a treasure. You just have to be willing to revise and edit until it shines. Get as many eyes on your writing as you can but take the good with the bad. Writing is so subjective like music. What one person loves, another hates. Finally--be prepared to face rejection a LOT before you see success. One of the largest publishers told J.K. Rowling that Harry Potter would never be commercially successful. An agent says, "No thanks.?" Just smile and move on.
D.M. King Since I just completed book two of my NINE trilogy called SOULLESS, I am taking a bit of a break from writing and just reading instead. Although, with the help of some of my students, we created SIX How to Host a Mystery mysteries to act out in class. We had so much fun, but it's more work than I realized.
D.M. King Other writers inspire me every day. I get inspiration from reading other writers. I say to myself, " I want to write like that one day."
D.M. King My wife and I check expiration dates before we buy food, so I played a what if game. What if the government put expiration dates on people and that technology came from a parallel alien planet called NINE?
