I just re-read Orwell's 1984, and was reminded of its genius. I'd recommend it to everyone. It's as relevant today, as it was when it first came out, commenting on governments creating mega-projects to keep their people in line, or censorship and control, but it's also funny and touching.
Second favourite - Lonely Planet's book on Ibiza, as I went there for the first time and it was stunning - not all drugs and dancefloors! Not read any recent releases, but I might try the Booker prize winner. Looks fascinating.

Having been a journalist for many years, but always writing for an editor, I wanted to write for myself. So I did. Everyone who ever said, "I wish I could write a book," is really saying, "I wish I wasn't so lazy, could stop watching TV and getting drunk with my mates, and instead sit at a laptop and do the work needed to get a book out there..." and that's how you start. At some point you'll realise that you're nearer the end than the start, and that's where it gets really fun.

Plan in advance. Nothing more irritating than heading down a path only to find a previous plot point makes it unworkable. And just write. Lots. Everyone says it, but it's true. The more you write, the more material you have to edit down to something of use.

Just keep writing. There is no such thing as writer's block. It's really a perceived notion that you're not writing the right material. So just keep writing. Even if you write 1000 words and only 50 of them are useful, then you're 50 words further ahead than you were yesterday.... just pray that's not the case every day!
