Sit down and write. Even if you only have five minutes a day. Even if you think it's garbage. Don't judge, just write. Vomit it all out. Then be open to critique. Remember, the magic comes in the revision.
One other thing: don't think you only have one book in you. The more you write, the more you will open yourself up. Before you know it, you will be flooded with ideas. The trick is knowing which have enough conflict to be developed into more.

I've written for as far back as I can remember. I wrote poems beginning in 4th grade, and I recall my grandmother asking, "Did you really write this?" in a way that almost accused me of plagiarism, but in the proudest of ways. It made me so proud, I couldn't wait to have everyone read what I had written.
Later, I wrote nightlife and restaurant reviews for Downtown Manhattan newspaper, marketing articles for a number of business and meeting magazines and a ton of corporate communications work. I also co-wrote four songs, with my husband writing the music to my lyrics. But I always dreamed of writing fiction, which is why I call this my final frontier.

This idea has been jumping around in my brain for about 10 years. When real estate agents started getting murdered in real life, I knew I had to write it, if only to warn agents about how important it is to stay safe.
Funny story: I submitted a few chapters years ago to an online writing group that dealt with the Merriweather Stevens incident and they believed it was real. That scared me! It showed me that I had the write the satiric parts of the story dealing with real estate agents way over the top.
