J. Matthew Fisk Hi, Brent! I'm in the middle of drafting it. I'm trying to get a self-published copy ready by Thanksgiving. Send me your email and I'll send you what I have so far. Thanks!
J. Matthew Fisk It kind of fell into my lap. Like a hand grenade.
J. Matthew Fisk I consider the subject matter and compose a suitable soundtrack. For example, writing Black Knights I used four songs from Beethoven looped over and over. This kept me calm enough to get through the emotional material.
J. Matthew Fisk True to my multi-tasking personality (that's what we procrastinators call it) I've got four more in various stages of completion.
1. PTSD in the Bible (non-fiction) - research phase; I was intrigued by the stories of Kings Saul and David (who each killed more people than cancer) when I noticed behaviors attributed to them that I would expect to find in soldiers with PTS. I think that there might be something there.
2. Wiley Bennington Fisk (Biography) - research nearing completion, compiling proposal; Wiley was a abolitionist preacher in Kentucky during the 1850's. When his wife died from infection and pro-slavers burned him out for his work on the Underground Railroad, Wiley was left destitute and trying to rebuild in Missouri. Three of his sons turned their backs on him, joining the Confederate cause as guerillas alongside the James and Younger gangs, Quantrell and Bloody Bill Anderson. I will examine the cost of following principles and conscience by documenting this man's struggle and sacrifice.
3. Moonpie McGee, Alien Hunter (fiction, humor); sample chapter and outline. What would you do if you were a redneck who got drunk one night and woke up the next morning convinced that Aliens had done abducted your cousin? Moonpie grabs his favorite hunting rifle, his hound dog and hops in his beat-up truck looking for a little payback. But is he crazy or is there actually a global conspiracy to take over the planet being run from Graceland?
4. The Threshold Stone (fiction); two chapters and an outline. A mechanized infantry company is diverted by the CIA during the invasion of Iraq to secure a supposed WMD. A massive sandstorm and the detonation of a mysterious device inside an ancient ziggurat leaves the company lost and stranded, completely cutoff from the outside world. As they struggle to find out what has happened, loyalties are questioned and soldiers begin to mysteriously die. Captain Tim Martin must discover the nature of the man called Enmer and how to defeat him before it is too late.
J. Matthew Fisk DON'T DO IT!! You're too young and have so much to live for!!

Seriously, write about what you love as if no one but you will ever read it.
J. Matthew Fisk Not sure. When I'm actually a writer instead of some hack who likes to farm and play with his daughter, I'll let you know.
J. Matthew Fisk Here are a few strategies I've used to kick the block:
1) Avoid writing. Did that for a long time. Useful tactic when you'd rather be playing Super Mario Cart
2) Alcohol, copious amounts. Good for sheer volume, not for content. Everything turns out like that dream you had that's really funny until you try to tell someone else about it.
3) The best route is to relax. Do something that makes you feel calm then come back and just put down one word. Then try a sentence for good measure. Before you know it you've got a whole compendium.
