As Editor of Running Times from 2000-2015, I came across many runners who continued to be dedicated, competitive and passionate about the sport through 4, 5, 6 or more decades. When I myself entered those years where one starts to question whether it is worth continuing to try, I took inspiration from runners who had be chasing it for longer than me. When I had the chance to pursue the book, I thought that it would be revealing to interview many such runners and looking for areas where they all agreed. Thus I arrived at the 9 keys to staying in the game, which I then took to science to confirm and elaborate.
