What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Catherine L. Morgan Read! Read great stuff, not schlock, whenever possible. Life is too short to read bad books. Read authors you know you're going to disagree with and authors you know will challenge and stretch you. Read with a pencil and underline amazing sentences. Keep a running list of The Great Books that you haven't gotten around to and chip away at it year after year. Try not to get in a rut; read new things. Read poetry, too, even if it's not your thing. And then, when you write, read it out loud. Listen to the play of words, listen for clarity, listen for YOU. Do you hear your own voice or someone else's?
