Read great stuff, not schlock, whenever possible. Life is too short to read bad books. Read authors you know you're going to disagree with and authors you know will challenge and stretch you. Read with a pencil and underline amazing sentences. Keep a running list of The Great Books that you haven't gotten around to and chip away at it year after year. Try not to get in a rut; read new things. Read poetry, too, even if it's not your thing. And then, when you write, read it out loud. Listen to the play of words, listen for clarity, listen for YOU. Do you hear your own voice or someone else's?(less)

I first read this in high school and didn’t appreciate it. I was reminded of it recently and just listened to the free audio book on YouTube and loved it. One of those that hums with meaning that you faintly hear but didn’t quite catch and want to go ...more

“To give is to spin wild in a circle, child in the father's hands, fearless.”
Catherine L. Morgan, Thirty Thousand Days: The Journey Home to God

“Perfect love casts out fear. It is risky, reckless, selfless, hard, deep, abiding.”
Catherine L. Morgan, Thirty Thousand Days: The Journey Home to God

“To have an abundant life, rich and full, means seeing the shortness of the day and seizing it, living the bucket list before the sun sets. It requires the quick gulp and the leaping blind, discarding what is heavy and worthless, investing in eternal things, counting as precious the gifts as they come and holding them loose because they will soon be gone.”
Catherine L. Morgan, Thirty Thousand Days: The Journey Home to God

“faithful gospel proclamation must include a robust theology of the goodness of God’s gifts in creation.”
Joe Rigney, The Things of Earth: Treasuring God by Enjoying His Gifts

“Think of the self that God has given as an acorn. It is a marvelous little thing, a perfect shape, perfectly designed for its purpose, perfectly functional. Think of the grand glory of an oak tree. God’s intention when He made the acorn was the oak tree. His intention for us is ‘… the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.’ Many deaths must go into our reaching that measure, many letting-goes. When you look at the oak tree, you don’t feel that the loss’ of the acorn is a very great loss. The more you perceive God’s purpose in your life, the less terrible the losses seem.”
Elisabeth Elliot

“When obedience to God contradicts what I think will give me pleasure, let me ask myself if I love Him.”
Elisabeth Elliot

“I have one desire now - to live a life of reckless abandon for the Lord, putting all my energy and strength into it.”
Elisabeth Elliot, Through Gates of Splendor

“Don't gobblefunk around with words.”
Roald Dahl, The BFG
