Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Srividya Sivakumar It's been six years in the making! The title- The Heart is an Attic- comes from the idea that the heart is often a collection of clutter- emotions and people we should let go of, but can't seem to be able to. Experiences that don't matter so much now, but still matter. That's where the book comes from. It rests in that space- hopefully wanted and desired.

How do you get inspired to write?
Srividya Sivakumar i am drawn to the feminine experience, to how society and the world treat women, to the darkness and the less light-filled side of love and longing. All these give me enough food for thought.

What are you currently working on?
Srividya Sivakumar Right now, nothing. i am writing poetry of course, but i have no plans of another collection. Yet.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Srividya Sivakumar With poetry, my advice is to keep writing and working on how you express yourself.
i am of the firm belief that you cannot be a good writer if you're not a good reader. So reading is essential too.
Accept criticism, let it help you, but be discerning about whose words you take to heart.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Srividya Sivakumar Being able to write, for sure! As a teacher and appreciator of the language, writing is my way of expressing that appreciation and love for words. With poetry, to be able to say much in little is also an aspect i enjoy.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Srividya Sivakumar There are days when i write a series of poems, and there are days, weeks, even, when i cannot write at all. It used to worry me, but then i read that poet extraordinaire, Mark Strand didn’t write poetry for a decade after the publication of Selected Poems. It made me feel better, and now i am okay about waiting for a poem to find its way to me.
