J.E. Martin I've always made up stories in my head. One of the ways I connected with them when I was a kid was when I was coloring! It seemed like characters and scenarios always came to me rather vividly when I was brain-deep in a coloring book.
I can do the same thing these days--I have a collection of coloring books (half with pretty, frilly pictures and the other half with naughty words) that came from my mom and husband. You can probably guess which half came from which person!
If I want to let me mind wander on a storyline or character, I can sit down with a coloring book and a beverage and go to town.
But usually, inspiration strikes at the worst times--while I'm trying to go to sleep, or when I've just started to vacuum. When that happens, I go over the ideas that come to me a few times mentally to commit them to memory, and I write them down as soon as I can.
I have also been known to note them in my phone right away if they're just too good to pass up.
J.E. Martin While I'd dabbled in writing my whole life, Black Wolf is my first publication. It actually started as a bit of a joke in the form of erotica. I told my husband I thought I could sit down and write an erotic short in one evening. He challenged me to do it, and I did it.

Lathan Black, the main character of that erotic short, wouldn't leave me alone, though. He kept nagging at me, telling me that wasn't the way the story went. I listened, and let him open the door to his world for me. The universe I found thanks to him is the basis for the entire Black Wolf series and the foundation for all the novels in the UNITY universe.
