There’s nothing like getting lost in creating your exciting odyssey. It’s a great escape, not just for readers. But first you need the whole story. I suggest trying something smallish first and saving your magnus opus for later, so you can experience the whole lifecycle quickly to see if it’s really for you. Writing’s not just rewriting (as someone said), there’s also production and online marketing too which can be half or more of the effort on a title. If you’re going to use professional editing, branding and production it can get expensive too. Read widely and learn the craft as you go, incorporating it into your book. There is always a strong desire to just get it done and out, to see your name on the cover. I think it’s better to take your time and don’t rush. Get it right. Finally, just start. Go! It won’t write itself.

It came out of the blue, though the subject of space was very likely. It’s something I held an interest in. It began with the question: what was the space race really about, considering the cost and after you move ‘one small step…’ out of the way? Love Or Liberty is a thrilling and entertaining way to experience the answer.

Thankfully, I've never really experienced writers block and I think there are a few things I do which dodge it. Most important, I keep the bar very low when I have a blank page to fill. I also focus on structure and goals, and imagine what I want to see as a reader (not the author). The writing seems to flow from there. Sometimes I just back off and handwrite ideas so they form sufficiently well first. I call all of this discovery, but others might experience it as writer's block. Once I have a first draft, the snowball's usually downhill from there.
