BOBBY MEHDWAN loves nothing more than writing a pulse-pounding, thought-provoking action thriller, with a heartwarming romance inside. He also writes non-fiction, personal development, and is a business leader by day. When he's not writing, he's probably climbing a real mountain with his family, enjoying a long bike ride or out running! ...more

Most important, I keep the bar very low when I have a blank page to fill. I also focus on structure and goals, and imagine what I want to see as a reader (not the author). The writing seems to flow from there. Sometimes I just back off and handwrite ideas so they form sufficiently well first. I call all of this discovery, but others might experience it as writer's block. Once I have a first draft, the snowball's usually downhill from there.(less)

I suggest trying something smallish first and saving your magnus opus for later, so you can experience the whole lifecycle quickly to see if it’s really for you. Writing’s not just rewriting (as someone said), there’s also production and online marketing too which can be half or more of the effort on a title. If you’re going to use professional editing, branding and production it can get expensive too. Read widely and learn the craft as you go, incorporating it into your book. There is always a strong desire to just get it done and out, to see your name on the cover. I think it’s better to take your time and don’t rush. Get it right. Finally, just start. Go! It won’t write itself.(less)

In case you're wondering, let's clear the air first... the movie was good. The book is better. The audiobook with Wil Wheaton's narration? Brilliant.

Not my genre but I picked this up after the movie. Dune’s an early hero’s journey epic which really comes to life on screen. It’s a mature sci-fi which takes its time with thought and attention to detail without shoving its toys in your face. Oddly, ...more
