Dear Michelle Morrison, How do you get your ideas? :-) Okay, more specifically... how do you know which of your characters in one book will be the main character in the next? What tells you that a particular character has more of his or her story to tell? Teresa C-B

Michelle Morrison I'm not trying to sound flippant, but I have no idea! Well, for the ideas, it can be sparked by one line in a song (for example, one of the dramatic scenes in A Lady's Secret was sparked by the song Chasing Cars) and I will start to build forward and backward for that idea. Many of my Regency/Victorian book ideas have come from pillaging secondary characters in another. Sometimes as I get to know the secondary character, their story unfolds in my head and I know I have to tell it. Other times, as with the book I'm currently working on, a reader will say "I loved The Lady Ordinary, but what happened to Josephine." When that actually happened, I was like, "pffft, she's just a secondary character. We don't need to know what happened to her." And then Josephine started whispering in my ear (I swear, that's what it feels like!) and it just goes from there. I think the most important thing is to simply be open to ideas. To say, "Hmm, I wonder what would happen if..." and allow your subconscious free reign to run with it!
