Writing has always been a part of Michelle's life and it was love of writing that led her to graduate magna cum laude with a degree in Professional Writing which she then used to write and edit technical manuals and reports for Los Alamos National Labs and Sandia National Labs. Needless to say, such writing left her craving something....juicier. After 8 historical romances and one historical fiction novel, she realized there was just as much to explore with characters from the modern world.

Michelle has always enjoyed telling deeply personal stories with characters who are flawed and complex but who grow and change through the course of the book. Her tenth book, The Space Inside, is an intimate and modern exploration of the chasm that grief

Well, for the ideas, it can be sparked by one line in a song (for example, one of the dramatic scenes in A Lady's Secret was sparked by the song Chasing Cars) and I will start to build forward and backward for that idea. Many of my Regency/Victorian book ideas have come from pillaging secondary characters in another. Sometimes as I get to know the secondary character, their story unfolds in my head and I know I have to tell it. Other times, as with the book I'm currently working on, a reader will say "I loved The Lady Ordinary, but what happened to Josephine." When that actually happened, I was like, "pffft, she's just a secondary character. We don't need to know what happened to her." And then Josephine started whispering in my ear (I swear, that's what it feels like!) and it just goes from there. I think the most important thing is to simply be open to ideas. To say, "Hmm, I wonder what would happen if..." and allow your subconscious free reign to run with it!(less)

When you remember your age...

Parents seem to be extraneous characters in romance. Often they’re long dead, which I get from a character-development standpoint (the main characters, not the dead ones), because this makes our protagonist wounded/alone/amenable to making mistakes that a parent might have cautioned against. I largely read historical romances, in which a deceased parent is understandable, but when they are present Read more of this blog post »
