David Saperstein I wrote that book two years ago. It's a sequel to my novel, FATAL REUNION - published by Bantam ISBN0-553-26709-4. It's currently titled, THE ENEMIES OF AWE (Air, Water, earth) - and eco-thriller built around my experiences as a documentary filmmaker (before I was a Novelist, Screenwriter and Director)
David Saperstein Thank you. I had nothing to do with the movie 'The Return". Fox studios decided NOT to use the remaining two books of the Cocoon Trilogy, Metamorphosis and Butterfly. The story they made up was NOT mine. I felt it was negative and demeaning of growing old in America - the opposite of what I was writing about. Te truth is that after the success of Cocoon, the studio did not want to pay me, and Ron Howard, for the success that Cocoon earned for them. Cocoon was always a trilogy - an uplifting story. The Return was a downer and nothing to do with my trilogy. But stay tuned because shortly I will get the film and TV rights back to Cocoon and then you will see the REAL story told properly, uplifting and with the spirit with which it was intended.
David Saperstein More than disappointed. But after spending much time in "Hollywood" I was not surprised. I wrote the story for the movie, Cocoon. It had great reviews, millions went to see it, two academy awards and it still plays around the world. The novel was a best seller here and internationally. The producers and studio knew that Cocoon was the first book of a trilogy. They had the manuscript for Metamorphosis. They told me they had "a better story", and went ahead and made that terrible film - a complete downer after the uplifting/feel-good Cocoon. That was their loss.
But it's gone away into the dustbin of film-trash.
After having the first novel in the Internet (1998), I held back publishing the third book, Butterfly: Tomorrow's Children, anticipating what became Kindle, Nook, iPad, ETC. E-books. The complete trilogy was published last year by Skyhorse Books. More news will be out later this year about the future of the complete trilogy. Cocoon is now a brand.
I am a professional writer. Inspiration for my original work - novels, screenplays, librettos, lyrics comes from a variety of sources, experiences, passions and, I guess, serendipity. It's hard to zero in on a specific inspiration.
David Saperstein A musical based on one of my novels that was also a movie.
David Saperstein Just do it. Don't talk about it. Develop your craft.
David Saperstein I'm doing what I love - telling stories as novel, movies, plays, songs...I joke and say, "I'm trying to avoid work..."
David Saperstein Happily, I never had it. I am a professional writer. That means working every day.
David Saperstein Something just catches me, and if it stays with me I begin to make notes and research. It takes time to germinate - sometimes years. Then, in the process, I decide if the story might be a book or movie or TV or a song...
David Saperstein Just finished a new novel based on extended families affected by suicide bombers.
