But after spending much time in "Hollywood" I was not surprised. I wrote the story for the movie, Cocoon. It had great reviews, millions went to see it, two academy awards and it still plays around the world. The novel was a best seller here and internationally. The producers and studio knew that Cocoon was the first book of a trilogy. They had the manuscript for Metamorphosis. They told me they had "a better story", and went ahead and made that terrible film - a complete downer after the uplifting/feel-good Cocoon. That was their loss.
But it's gone away into the dustbin of film-trash.
After having the first novel in the Internet (1998), I held back publishing the third book, Butterfly: Tomorrow's Children, anticipating what became Kindle, Nook, iPad, ETC. E-books. The complete trilogy was published last year by Skyhorse Books. More news will be out later this year about the future of the complete trilogy. Cocoon is now a brand.
I am a professional writer. Inspiration for my original work - novels, screenplays, librettos, lyrics comes from a variety of sources, experiences, passions and, I guess, serendipity. It's hard to zero in on a specific inspiration.(less)

“I have finally reverted the publishing rights for my Cocoon Trilogy back to me and, for the first time, e-published the final book - Butterfly: Tomorrow's Children. Cocoon, the movie and the book, was only the beginning.”
David Saperstein, Butterfly: Tomorrow's Children
