Lev D. Lewis Stare at the screen; stare at the wall; stare out of the window; walk to and fro; go to the kitchen and make coffee; drink coffee and curse at the writers who say, ‘There’s no such thing as writer’s block’; go out for a walk, still cursing; return home; watch TV; curse some more; go to bed and, maybe not that night, but hopefully one night soon, in the liminal zone between wakefulness and sleep, the block shifts.
Lev D. Lewis I was studying creative writing and the 1st year tutor suggested that I read Raymond Chandler. That summer, I bought a copy of the Penguin Classics’ The Big Sleep and Other Novels. The book begins with a page about the author, and to my surprise, I learnt that Chandler wasn’t educated in Chicago (the city of his birth) nor Los Angeles (the city he wrote about) nor anywhere else in the US, but at Dulwich College, just up the road from me in London. That started me thinking; Frank Bale was formed in my head, and come the start of the 2nd year, I was raring to go.
