That summer, I bought a copy of the Penguin Classics’ The Big Sleep and Other Novels. The book begins with a page about the author, and to my surprise, I learnt that Chandler wasn’t educated in Chicago (the city of his birth) nor Los Angeles (the city he wrote about) nor anywhere else in the US, but at Dulwich College, just up the road from me in London. That started me thinking; Frank Bale was formed in my head, and come the start of the 2nd year, I was raring to go.(less)
