Alexander Bell I really can't remember. These things come to me and then gestate over years and years. I find novelistic potential in situations or hypothetical events. What would happen if...? I also get a perverse pleasure out of creating mayhem and mischief for my characters. I wonder if Zola felt like that. In Zola's books, things are pretty bad on page one, then they get inexorably worse over the next 400 pages. Hopefully mine are a bit brighter than that.
Alexander Bell I've liked writing for years. Some people do mechanics, some are great musicians. I like dealing in words. Language has always fascinated me, which is probably why I studied modern languages.
I am also inspired to write by great writers and by rubbish ones. There is so much dross that sells. I can do better than that.
Alexander Bell A book that takes place in Liverpool in the 80s about an unintentional manslaughter. It's going to be nothing like Claus and Claws except that it will probably be funny in places. It's not really meant to be, but I can't help myself.
Alexander Bell Don't waste your time waiting for encouragement. There probably won't be any. If you want to write, write. Don't listen to anyone who suggests you shouldn't or that it's a waste of time.
Alexander Bell Creating something from scratch. It's like a cake, but it lasts longer.
Alexander Bell I don't have writer's block. I have far more stuff to write than I have time or energy to write it.
