I was inspired to write “Princess of Undersea” because of the television show Once Upon A Time, coupled with my love for The Little Mermaid, in spite of the fact that there were bits of the story I didn’t appreciate/agree with. I set out to write a version of the story that highlighted different themes than the typical story: What if the merprincess wasn’t motivated to become human merely because of “love at first sight” or just because someone told her not to? What if the spell didn’t take away her ability to speak altogether, but still made it difficult to communicate? How would the story change if there were kong’s trying to prepare for the next generation to claim the throne?
Questions like that helped me develop a story that is old and new at the same time. :)
