Leslie Conzatti is a blogger, author, and avid enthusiast of all things book-related. Residing in the Pacific Northwest, she currently works as an elementary school paraeducator--leading small groups, supervising children outside the classroom, and providing in-class support for teachers. Since 2013, she has been running a writing/review blog called "The Upstream Writer", where she posts original serials, excerpts from current and past projects, updates on her writing, and featured reviews of independently-published titles. I set out to write a version of the story that highlighted different themes than the typical story: What if the merprincess wasn’t motivated to become human merely because of “love at first sight” or just because someone told her not to? What if the spell didn’t take away her ability to speak altogether, but still made it difficult to communicate? How would the story change if there were kong’s trying to prepare for the next generation to claim the throne?
Questions like that helped me develop a story that is old and new at the same time. :)(less)

Part 2 "Compost and Consequences"
I saw the lines of students flowing from one classroom to another, and felt a rush of relief. I wasn't late for my next class until I heard the bell. I joined a file of Level 9 students headed toward the Science classrooms. I liked having Science after History, because the instructor, Madame Hephreny, was infinitely more interesting than Scholar Mikel--and s Read more of this blog post »
