Oh that's a good question!
I have recently started researching my family history and I have a great-great-great grandmother who during one census is happily married and then in the next she and her daughter are in a workhouse. I would love to build a story around how she got there and how she got out.
On a day to day basis - the mystery of the missing keys always needs solving!

It's just a trick, they said, go on do it.
I climb into the box and allow myself to be bound, then the saw starts grinding, sharp teeth against wood then against flesh; I scream, this is no trick.

I always loved the world created by Armistead Maupin over at Barbary Lane - I so wanted to know Mrs Madrigal.

I've just finished writing the first book in a new series so I haven't been reading very much. Now I'm back to my book club and the classic we're reading for October is Lord of the Flies - anyone out there read it?

I go for a walk with the dog to clear my head and simply ask myself what the character would do next. They're outside a door - do they open it or not? Then there is no block - you know what to write. What happens when they open that door usually follows if you really know your characters.
Don't sit staring at a screen whatever you do - get out there & absorb yourself in real life for a few hours - it's usually inspirational.

Ooh - making things up as you go along! Inventing people, creating comedy scenes, hearing readers say you made them laugh out loud. It's like never having to grow up really!

Writing 80-90,000 words is no mean feat so be ready to put the hours in. It can be a lonely affair so do join a network - perhaps a writing group or an online forum. It helps to know there are others struggling with the plot or the characters at 3am !
Also, make sure you get some exercise - sometimes you're so engrossed in your writing to don't move at all for hours on end and that is agony!

I'm developing a fourth novel which is part of a new series. It's a different genre for me so watch this space!

I think you either love writing or you don't. I've always enjoyed it whether I'm writing a journal, letters or even reports. I can't imagine not writing.

The Heat is On is the sequel to The Mercury Travel Club so the characters were already on a journey. I picked up where I left off and asked - what would really upset this group of friends when things are going so well?
