Heather Murray This summer I'll be reading a number of books about and from Africa - guidebooks, novels like Half os a Yellow Sun, short stories by Anthony Doerr. And then I've already got a stack of print and ebooks piled up: Do Not Say We Have Nothing, The Return by Hisham Matar, Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert ...
Heather Murray I seem to be able to dream the future. Several major events - the death of a loved one, the scene and circumstances of a major separation, events in the life of a long-lost friend - all appeared to me in dreams, either well before they happened or while they were happening, although I had not been thinking about the person/place when I had the dream. No idea where this 'gift' comes from.
Heather Murray One of my all-time favorite books is 'My Family And Other Animals' by Gerald Durrell, and I've always wanted to write a book like it. When I started visiting Cuba, getting to know people there, and discovering beautiful parts of the country with no tourists at all, I started thinking about writing a humorous travel memoir like Durrell's.
Heather Murray I'm currently working on publicizing my Cuba travel book, which turns out to be the hardest part (for me) of being a self-published author. It takes a lot of time for very little effect - much more time than I imagines. Besides, I'd rather be writing than scaring up reviews, placing Google ads, figuring out where to invest publicity money...
Heather Murray I don't really consider myself a writer, but I'd say the best thing about writing is the exhilarating feeling of mental flow when you're writing fluently, expressing what you intended, discovering new thoughts while you write.
